Personalised Primary & Secondary Cancer Prevention

Physical Activity Guidebook

A very useful tool for the patients and caregivers has been created. It was a successful collaboration between JANE2 and EUnetCCC.

“Recovery, step by step” is an educational guide supporting safe, adapted physical activity across the breast cancer journey, from diagnosis and treatment to recovery and survivorship.

The guide turns evidence into a user-friendly, patient-centred tool to help people understand how to move safely, based on their condition, energy and stage of treatment.

Physical activity is not an “extra” in cancer care, it helps reduce fatigue, maintain mobility, support mental wellbeing and improve quality of life. Yet many patients lack clear guidance.

This guide addresses that gap through the following:

  • step-by-step exercises adapted to each phase
  • simple self-assessment tools for safe progression
  • clear, accessible instructions focused on safety and confidence

It is designed for patients, people at risk, caregivers, and healthcare professionals, serving as both a daily support tool and a reference between consultations.

Movement is not performance. Movement is daily support.

“Recovery, Step by Step: Safe Exercises During and After Breast Cancer Treatment” is available free of charge in digital format.

“We need to rethink prevention. It doesn’t end when treatment begins. Safe, structured movement is not optional, it is how patients rebuild strength, confidence and trust in their own bodies.” — Dr. Delia Nicoară, Institutul Oncologic „Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuță”

The initiative is part of a broader European effort to advance personalised cancer prevention and care. The guide was developed within the Joint Action on Networks of Expertise on Cancer (JANE-2), under Work Package 8 – Network of Expertise on personalised primary and secondary cancer prevention, in synergy with the European Network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres (EUnetCCC). It contributes to WP8 activities, specifically Task 8.2.2 – Primary and Secondary Prevention: Developing and Disseminating Knowledge for Personalised Cancer Prevention.

The development of the guide was supported by collaboration with Centre Léon Bérard (France) through the twinning activities within JANE-2 WP8. The team extends sincere gratitude for the opportunity to directly observe clinical practice, for the openness in sharing expertise and experiences, and for the valuable contributions of the multidisciplinary team, with key inputs from Beatrice Fervers, Baptiste Fournier and Antonin Poullet. These insights played a key role in shaping and structuring the physical activity interventions included in the guide.
