The Casino Urban Culture Center in Cluj-Napoca hosted on 26th February 2026 the official launch of the guide “Recovery, Step by Step: Safe Exercises During and After Breast Cancer Treatment”, an educational resource dedicated to promoting safe, tailored physical activity for people affected by breast cancer.

Organised by the Oncology Institute “Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuță” (IOCN), the event brought together healthcare specialists, community representatives, and patient organisations to highlight the role of physical activity in prevention, treatment, and recovery.

The event was opened by Prof. Patriciu Achimaș-Cadariu, MD, and Dr. Delia Nicoară (IOCN), alongside representatives of initiatives promoting active lifestyles and improved quality of life: Mirel Alexa (Sports Festival), Dr. Dan Cristian (HealthFest), Béatrice Fervers (Centre Léon Bérard), and Mirela Popescu (the “Rediscover Happiness” Association).

“Our patients were the driving force behind every step that brought us here today. Through this collaboration, we hope to find the validation of our work, and I am convinced this initiative will make a real difference in their lives. Every effort is worth it when it means improving the quality of life and survival of people with cancer.”
— Prof. Univ. Dr. Patriciu Achimaș-Cadariu, Institutul Oncologic „Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuță”

“Let’s not forget that sport is not just about trophies. It’s also about hope. About movement. About recovery.”
— Mirel Alexa, Sports Festival

“We need to rethink prevention. It doesn’t end when treatment begins. Safe, structured movement is not optional, it is how patients rebuild strength, confidence and trust in their own bodies.”
— Dr. Delia Nicoară, Institutul Oncologic „Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuță”

The initiative is part of a broader European effort to advance personalised cancer prevention and care. The guide was developed within the Joint Action on Networks of Expertise on Cancer (JANE-2), under Work Package 8 – Network of Expertise on personalised primary and secondary cancer prevention, in synergy with the European Network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres (EUnetCCC). It contributes to WP8 activities, specifically Task 8.2.2 – Primary and Secondary Prevention: Developing and Disseminating Knowledge for Personalised Cancer Prevention.

The development of the guide was supported by collaboration with Centre Léon Bérard (France) through the twinning activities within JANE-2 WP8. The team extends sincere gratitude for the opportunity to directly observe clinical practice, for the openness in sharing expertise and experiences, and for the valuable contributions of the multidisciplinary team, with key inputs from  Beatrice Fervers, Baptiste Fournier and Antonin Poullet. These insights played a key role in shaping and structuring the physical activity interventions included in the guide.

The guide provides evidence-based recommendations for safe physical activity before, during, and after treatment. Structured in an accessible format, it includes step-by-step exercise instructions and guidance on adapting physical activity to individual energy levels, mobility, and exercise tolerance.

Aimed at breast cancer patients, people at high risk, caregivers, support groups, and healthcare professionals, the guide supports the integration of physical activity into everyday life and cancer care.

“Recovery, Step by Step: Safe Exercises During and After Breast Cancer Treatment” is available free of charge in digital format.

We encourage you to share the guide with those who may benefit from safe and structured physical activity before, during, or after breast cancer treatment.
